nonat Inc. (Headquarters: Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture; CEO: Keisuke Ito), a developer of medical AI foundation models, announced on December 22 the commencement of joint research with Gifu University Hospital (Hospital Director: Haruhiko Akiyama; Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology: Marin Isobe), part of the Tokai National Higher Education and Research System.
This research focuses on the R&D of AI foundation models specifically designed for women and children, aiming to solve pressing medical challenges. The project will also be conducted as a multi-center study in collaboration with Medical Corporation Saintpaulia Misao Ladies Hospital (Gifu City).
In the fields of obstetrics and pediatrics, regional disparities in medical resources and variations in the quality of care have become significant issues. nonat is developing solutions that lead to better decision-making support in clinical settings and improved quality of care, utilizing AI foundation models specialized for women and children as its core technology.
As the first phase of this joint research, the team will focus on the "pregnancy period" to establish AI-powered pregnancy monitoring technology. By integrating clinical data from multiple facilities, the project aims to expand the diversity of subject data (population characteristics), thereby enhancing the model's accuracy and versatility.
Professor Marin Isobe of Gifu University Hospital commented, "Precisely because we are in a regional area, there is value in presenting a medical DX model for women and children to the world." He expressed his intention to promote this as implementation-based research that anticipates solving issues in broad medical zones, such as the Hida region.
Keisuke Ito, CEO of nonat, also stated his ambition: "We want to face the real issues on the clinical frontline and connect innovation to effective social implementation."
■ About the ICT Startup League
This support program was launched in FY2023, initiated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' "Start-up Creation-type Germination Research and Development Support Project."
The ICT Startup League supports startups through four main pillars:
1. R&D Funding / Hands-on Support
Up to 20 million JPY in research and development funds is provided as a grant. Additionally, in terms of hands-on support, the evaluation committee members involved in the selection process continue to work closely with the startups after selection to promote their growth. For companies that committee members felt they "absolutely wanted to select," a support system is built akin to "Oshi-katsu" (fandom support), where the evaluators themselves provide continuous assistance, including advice on business plans and offering growth opportunities.
2. Discovery & Incubation
The league provides opportunities for learning and networking to encourage the business growth of league members.
It also deploys initiatives to discover those aiming to start businesses in the future, aiming to expand the base of the ecosystem.
3. Competition & Co-creation
Designed as a place for positive competition similar to a sports league, startups learn together and improve through friendly rivalry while competing to win the necessary funding (up to 20 million JPY). Furthermore, through various opportunities such as sessions with evaluation committee members, the league provides a venue for co-creation where league members can collaborate to expand their businesses.
4. Dissemination (PR)
The initiatives of league members are broadcast in collaboration with the media! By letting more people know about these businesses, the league aims to expand opportunities for new matching and chances.
