Bashow Releases Survey on Drive Date Conversations ― The "Limit of Silence" is 5 Minutes; Supporting Conversation Starters via Local Topic Guide App ―

Survey results regarding drive date conversations

Bashow Inc. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Masashi Hodozuka), a company developing services to enrich travel experiences, announced on January 29 the results of its "Survey on Conversations During Drive Dates," conducted among men and women in their 20s to 40s.

The survey results revealed that over 80% of respondents believe the liveliness of conversation during a drive date influences subsequent romantic interest. Meanwhile, approximately half of the respondents admitted to feeling pressure to come up with topics. It was also revealed that the median limit for tolerating silence inside a car is "5 minutes."

■ The "5-Minute Silence" Wall and Pressure to Keep Talking

According to the survey, approximately 60% of people have experienced awkwardness when conversation stalled during a drive date. The results highlighted that in the enclosed space of a vehicle, even relatively short periods of silence can easily become a psychological burden.

Furthermore, only a little over 40% of people prepare topics in advance, suggesting a reality where adequate measures are not taken despite recognizing the importance of conversation. The most common prepared topic was "shared hobbies and reminiscing," indicating efforts to consider the relationship with the partner.

■ Naturally Connecting the "Atmosphere" with an App

Bashow App

Bashow provides the "Bashow App," which offers short audio guides about topics in the surrounding area once every three minutes while moving.

The concept is not to "force a lively conversation" but to "create an atmosphere where silence isn't awkward," aiming to contribute to resolving the drive date issues highlighted in this survey. The app is currently operating primarily in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

■ About the ICT Startup League
This is a support program launched in FY2023, initiated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' "Startup Creation-type Germination Research and Development Support Project."
The ICT Startup League supports startups through four main pillars:
1. R&D Funding / Accompaniment Support
Up to 20 million JPY in research and development funding is provided as a grant. In addition, through accompaniment support, the evaluation committee members who were involved in the selection process continue to stand by the startups after selection to promote growth. For companies that committee members evaluated as "must-select candidates," a support system akin to "Oshi-katsu" (enthusiastic fandom support) is built, where the evaluators themselves provide continuous support, such as advice on business plans and offering growth opportunities.
2. Discovery & Cultivation
We provide opportunities for learning and networking to promote the business growth of league members.
We also expand the base by discovering those who aim to start businesses in the future.
3. Competition & Co-creation
Serving as a positive competitive arena like a sports league, the program allows startups to learn together and improve through friendly rivalry while competing to win the necessary funding (up to 20 million JPY). We also provide a place for co-creation where league members can collaborate to expand their businesses through various opportunities, such as sessions with evaluation committee members.
4. Dissemination
We broadcast the initiatives of league members in collaboration with media outlets! By letting more people know about these businesses, we aim to expand opportunities for new matching and chances.
