BooQs Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Iruma City, Saitama Prefecture; CEO: Shinji Aikawa), operator of the AI dictionary and vocabulary app "DiQt," announced on November 5th that it has released introductory level wordbooks (approx. 1,200 words) and example sentence quizzes for the 28 languages taught as majors at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS).

This enables all DiQt users to quickly master foundational vocabulary and example sentences for 28 languages, including English, Chinese, Polish, Urdu, and Arabic.

■ Developed in Collaboration with Tokyo University of Foreign Studies

"DiQt" is an AI dictionary and vocab app equipped with a system to "help users not forget vocabulary." In 2024, it was introduced at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) and is provided free of charge to students and affiliates as part of an industry-academia collaboration.

According to the company, while materials were previously only available in English, there were many requests from students wanting vocabulary books for their major languages.

Therefore, the company utilized its dictionary data and generative AI technology to create an introductory vocabulary list (approx. 1,200 words) for the 28 languages. Based on this, they developed educational materials such as wordbooks and example sentence quizzes, which are now being offered to all users.

Four types of materials are available, including multiple-choice word questions and example sentence flashcards. All materials feature audio pronunciation, which the company says is also useful for strengthening listening skills.

"DiQt" builds its multilingual dictionary by combining generative AI and consumer-generated media (CGM), an effort that was recognized and led to its selection for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' "ICT Startup League" in 2023.

■ Future Outlook

The company plans to expand beyond the introductory level, gradually adding intermediate and advanced vocabulary lists and materials for each language.

"DiQt" is available as a web app, as well as for iOS, Android, and as a browser extension.

■ ICT Startup League
This is a support program launched in FY2023, originating from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' "Support Program for Startup-driven Gearing-up R&D."
The ICT Startup League supports startups through four pillars.
① R&D Funding / Hands-on Support
A maximum of 20 million yen in R&D expenses is provided as a subsidy. Additionally, in the hands-on support system, selection committee members involved in choosing league members continue to mentor them and promote their growth after selection. For companies that committee members evaluated as "must-select," a "super-fan" style support structure is built, where the committee members themselves provide continuous support, such as advice on business plans and opportunities for growth.
② Discovery & Development
We provide opportunities for learning and networking to promote the business growth of league members.
We also work to discover individuals aiming to start businesses, aiming to expand the base of entrepreneurship.
③ Competition & Co-creation
It provides a place for positive competition, much like a sports league, with a system where startups learn together, compete constructively, and win the funding (up to 20 million yen) they truly need. It also offers a place for co-creation, where league members can collaborate and expand their businesses through various opportunities, such as sessions with selection committee members.
④ Promotion
We collaborate with media to publicize the initiatives of league members! By making their businesses known to many people, we aim to expand opportunities for new matching and chances.
