What Does It Take for a Startup to Win on the Global Stage? CIC's Mr. Nagura Speaks Passionately! — The 1st Startup League Academy Digest Report —

On Friday, September 5th, the first 'Startup League Academy' was held at CIC Tokyo in Toranomon Hills.

The venue was packed with attendees, buzzing with excitement throughout a special session by Masaru Nagura, a member of the steering committee and Director of the CIC Institute, and a 'Value-Up Session' featuring two selected startups.

The theme of the session led by Mr. Nagura was 'How to Become a Startup That Wins on the Global Stage.' His powerful message on the essentials of business growth with a global perspective greatly inspired the attendees.

Many participants commented, "It was incredibly informative," and "This will be extremely helpful for our business growth starting tomorrow."

■ Value-Up Session: Toward Concrete Next Actions

Value-Up Session: Toward Concrete Next Actions

This session was originally titled 'Public Mentoring.' However, sparked by a comment from steering committee chairman Tadashi Fukuda, who wanted "a name more fitting for the content," ideas flew from the audience on the spot, and it was ultimately christened the 'Value-Up Session.'

And that wasn't the only live element of the session.

The two companies presenting were InnoJin Inc. and Toyeight Holdings Inc. In fact, Toyeight Holdings secured their spot after strongly requesting to fill a last-minute opening that day. Their extraordinary passion for this program was palpable in the room.

In the newly-named Value-Up Session, steering committee members and selection committee members proposed a series of concrete actions to accelerate the business of each presenting company, leading to a very dense and engaging discussion.

Enthusiastic feedback from participants included, "I realized how seriously they'll engage with you if you're serious," "I'm convinced this program leads to results. I'm determined to get results myself," and "I was amazed; I've never seen a program with this much speed and sincere dedication before."

■ ICT Startup League
This support program was launched in fiscal year 2023, originating from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' "Program to Support Emerging R&D for Startup Creation."
The ICT Startup League supports startups through four pillars.
① R&D Funding / Hands-On Support
Up to 20 million yen in R&D expenses is provided in the form of subsidies. Additionally, through hands-on support, the selection committee members involved in choosing league members continue to mentor and promote their growth even after selection. For companies that a committee member evaluates as "a must-select," a dedicated support system is established where the member themselves continuously provides advice on business plans and offers growth opportunities—a true "championing" style of support.
② Discovery & Nurturing
We provide opportunities for learning and networking to promote the business growth of league members.
We also focus on discovering aspiring entrepreneurs to broaden the base of the ecosystem.
③ Competition & Co-Creation
The program offers a positive competitive environment, much like a sports league, where startups learn together and compete to win the funding they truly need (up to 20 million yen). It also provides a co-creation space where league members can collaborate and expand their businesses through various opportunities, including sessions with selection committee members.
④ Promotion
We collaborate with the media to publicize the initiatives of our league members! By raising awareness of their businesses, we aim to expand opportunities for new matching and chances.
