Adora, Co., Ltd. is an AI startup founded in 2023 that develops and operates “Kodamamo,” an app for parents and children. Using proprietary analysis technology, the app employs AI to detect signs of potential harm in children’s smartphone communications and notifies parents. The app includes various parental control features, such as location sharing and in-app purchase blocking, providing peace of mind as a comprehensive child-monitoring app. It is designed to ensure safety while respecting the privacy of young people. The company collaborates with major Japanese mobile carriers and has a track record of providing the app for devices used in the GIGA School initiative.
We are developing an AI-powered web filtering feature as an additional safety measure for the child safety app “Kodomamo.” Unlike conventional web filtering, we plan to develop this feature to use AI to assess the risk level of web pages being accessed. Implementing this feature will enable us to proactively protect children from risks associated with smartphone and internet use. Challenges to be addressed before full-scale implementation include improving detection accuracy and reducing server costs; we will continue development to make the internet safer for young people.

Naoto Tomita While enrolled in the graduate school at Tokyo Institute of Technology, she serves as a visiting faculty member at Fujita Health University. She co-founded the company with her current CTO, whom she met while managing a café in New Delhi, India. In 2022, after receiving a request from the Aichi Prefectural Police asking, “Is there a way to reduce sexual abuse stemming from children’s use of social media?” she developed “Kodomamo,” an AI app for parents and children, through a public-private-academic partnership involving the Aichi Prefectural Police and Fujita Health University. In 2023, she founded Adora and is working to implement security AI in society to protect everyone from children to seniors from crime. She holds a certification as a child counselor. |

| Motivation, Goals, and Ideal World | It all began in 2022, when the Aichi Prefectural Police approached Fujita Health University—where I was serving as a visiting professor—with a request: “Is there a way to reduce sexual abuse stemming from children’s use of social media?” At the time, Aichi Prefecture was experiencing a series of incidents in which young people connected with unknown adults on social media, leading to sexual abuse. Messages on social media and similar platforms are like a “black box”; neither the police nor parents can detect dangerous exchanges before abuse occurs. On the other hand, having parents monitor every aspect of their children’s smartphone use undermines children’s privacy and the trust between parents and children. I wanted to use technology to address the conflict parents face—the desire to “protect their children, but not want to monitor them.” So, together with our current CTO, whom I met in New Delhi, India, I developed “Kodomamo,” an app that uses AI to detect only dangerous situations and alert parents, and we founded Adora in 2023. Currently, through adoption in KDDI’s rate plans and implementation in educational devices provided by local governments, our solution is reaching many households and schools. Our goal is to create a society where safety measures are “a given” when children are given smartphones. We also aim to use AI to address the challenge that only about 40 percent of young people use content filtering. Furthermore, this technology can be applied to protect seniors from social media-based investment scams and romance scams. From children to seniors, we will create a “social safety infrastructure” in Japan—one that protects people from the malicious threats lurking behind smartphones—and spread it throughout the world. |
