A startup originating from Tohoku University. We are developing an AI-equipped automated slit lamp device and a telemedicine platform, currently undergoing field testing in elderly care facilities and home care settings in Miyagi Prefecture. Even non-specialists can capture and transmit images in a short time, enabling a one-stop process that includes receiving findings from ophthalmologists. It implements “anytime, anywhere, for anyone” access to ophthalmic care in settings where it was previously difficult to reach. This aims to reduce the risk of falls and cognitive decline associated with visual impairment, fostering a society where people can live healthily for longer.
This league will explore expanding the scope of ophthalmic telemedicine, which has previously focused on home visits and senior care facilities, into broader domains. It will verify the application of this system—based on AI-equipped automated slit lamps enabling consistent examinations by non-specialists and rapid feedback of findings via a cloud-based diagnostic platform—to screening sites and community clinics. Furthermore, it will conduct market research for telemedicine systems overseas and work toward implementation.

| Motivation, Goals, and Ideal World | The origin of my aspiration to become an entrepreneur lies in my experience studying abroad in Boston, USA, during my university years. While pursuing research studies, I encountered a young man my age who developed his own robot and negotiated with executives of major corporations to achieve its social implementation. Witnessing this fusion of technology and business driving societal change was profoundly impactful, leading me to realize that “the power to change the world lies in delivering technology to society.” This experience became the catalyst for my aspiration to become an entrepreneur who changes society, even while being a physician. An ancient Chinese saying goes: “A minor physician cures disease, a middle physician cures people, and a great physician cures the nation.” While commonly used to categorize physicians, I set my own goal to fulfill all three roles simultaneously. I engage with patients clinically, identify challenges from that perspective, then use technology and business to transform society, ultimately feeding those insights back into healthcare. Creating this cycle represents the way of life I personally aspire to pursue. Currently at Tohoku University, I am developing an AI-equipped automated slit lamp and a telemedicine platform, striving to transform settings where ophthalmic care is difficult to access, such as home care and elderly care facilities. Looking ahead, I aspire to grow beyond ophthalmology, becoming a leader who implements Japan's outstanding technologies into society and delivers them globally. By bridging medicine and technology, I aim to realize a future where everyone can live healthy and fulfilling lives. |
