thermalAI 2025

Kyoto, Kyoto City

We are a Kyoto University-based startup working to launch a new thermal management business that accurately measures and visualizes heat, and controls and utilizes it. Our core technology is a thermal measurement technology that can accurately measure the thermal conductivity of materials at the nano- and micro-levels, which we pride ourselves on being the world's best. Until now, we have primarily conducted commissioned research on thermal measurement for large companies. However, as thermal challenges have become increasingly severe, particularly in the semiconductor industry, we aim to go beyond thermal measurement alone and develop groundbreaking “thermal reservoir computing technology” for societal implementation. Our mission is to provide solutions that simultaneously address two societal challenges—thermal waste and computational waste—and contribute to the AI and IoT-driven society.

Fast and ultra energy-efficient edge AI development enabled by thermal reservoir computing

We have developed a technology that converts discarded heat (waste heat) into “AI computing resources,” thereby repurposing heat itself as a physical reservoir. In Thermal Reservoir Computing (TRC), the dynamics of heat diffusion are utilized as time-series features, enabling heat that was previously discarded (waste heat) to be repurposed as “computing resources.” In the product implementation of TRC, accurate thermal measurement-based thermal diagnosis and thermal design are critical elements. These thermal diagnosis and thermal design require analysis through AI-driven simulation, and during the project period, we will develop simulation software to facilitate the miniaturization and evaluation of TRC.

thermalAI Representative Introduction
REPRESENTATIVE

Representative Takayuki Kasamatsu Takayuki Kasamatsu
I have been involved in startups for over 15 years since graduating from university. After graduating, I worked as a certified public accountant, supporting startups' IPOs from the outside for about 10 years. Later, I decided I wanted to contribute to business growth from within a startup, so I took on a leadership role in both management and business operations at a seed-stage IT startup. Currently, I am supporting the IPO of a startup founded at the University of Tokyo while also working as an EIR (Entrepreneur-in-Residence) at the University of Tokyo IPC, aiming to launch my own deep tech startup.
Main Achievements Participated in the 2025 ICT Startup League
Selected for the 2025 NEP Development Course
Childhood Dream Growing up watching my father work around the world in places like Malaysia and Russia, and my grandfather run his own clothing store, I dreamed of becoming a business leader who could work globally and start my own business.
Influential People, Things, and Events Person: Junji Takaoka
Event: Birth of a child
Motivation, Goals, and Ideal World [What inspired me to start my own business]
Ever since I graduated from college, I had always wanted to start my own business, but since I didn't have any ideas or experience, I decided to start my career by becoming a certified public accountant and working as an external expert supporting startups with their IPOs. While supporting clients in growing their businesses and achieving IPOs, I realized I wanted to drive business growth from within a startup myself. I transitioned to a startup, taking on leadership roles in both management and business operations, and gained experience in M&A exits and post-merger integration (PMI). Despite accumulating business experience, I felt frustrated by the lack of ideas for business development. However, I learned about the EIR program at the University of Tokyo IPC and was inspired by the unique technology of university-based deep tech startups, leading me to aspire to found a deep tech startup.
【Goals I Want to Achieve and the World I Want to Create】
In the short term, I aim to achieve global business growth by launching a university-based startup on my own. While it is extremely challenging to create a market with technology that does not yet exist, I am eager to achieve this alongside Professor Hiroya. In the medium to long term, through my EIR activities, I have come to appreciate the high potential and uniqueness of technologies dormant within various universities in Japan. I aspire to contribute to the realization of an ecosystem where university-based technologies are more widely recognized and their social implementation is promoted.
