Protecting Your Back with an App's "Gaze"? A Practicing Doctor's Vision for the Future of Preventive Medicine

In recent years, municipalities across Japan have been focusing on promoting healthy life expectancy to solve one of the problems arising from two societal issues: a super-aging society and a declining birthrate. Maintaining a healthy mind and body that allows for an unimpeded daily life leads to curbing medical costs and revitalizing local communities. Regardless, being healthy is something most people desire, as it allows them to live and work without anxiety.

"Spine Meter" visualizes posture while working on a PC using only facial images.

In this league, we will work on expanding the functions of the posture estimation software “Spinometer” and improving its user interface. We will enhance the app's functionality by adding real-time warnings for poor posture, stretch recommendations, and posture visualization to our proprietary technology that estimates alignment from the cervical spine to the lumbar spine using only facial images from a webcam. This will help promote continuous use of the app. Additionally, we will explore monetization strategies through the introduction of advertising features and social media marketing initiatives targeting specific demographics. Through this research and development, we aim to create an environment where everyone can consciously improve their posture on a daily basis.

Representative	Isao Hashimoto Representative Isao Hashimoto is a medical doctor and associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Tohoku University, where he serves as the head of spinal surgery. He is a leading clinician who performs over 100 high-difficulty spinal surgeries annually. In response to the increasing prevalence of chronic pain caused by poor posture, he recognized the need for practical solutions that integrate AI and medicine. Together with members from an engineering background, he developed the posture estimation software “Spinometer.” In 2024, he founded GET BACK Co., Ltd. and is now tackling the challenge of implementing these solutions in the medical field. He has obtained patents in Japan and the United States, presented at numerous international conferences, and actively publishes medical papers.
