From Reactive Troubleshooting to Proactive Prediction: Harbitt's Challenge to Transform the International Logistics Industry

International logistics connects Japan to the world. While maritime transport acts as the "infrastructure of trade," carrying over 90% of imports and exports by weight, it remains plagued by "inefficiency" and "analog" issues—such as frequent ship delays with uncertain arrival times and fragmented, cumbersome information sharing among stakeholders.

Research and development of route optimization methods in international logistics

In this league, we will conduct research and development on route optimization methods for maritime transport with the aim of reducing delivery delays in trade. There are various routes for maritime transport, and each route's delay status changes, making it difficult to find an appropriate route that can meet delivery deadlines. As a result, losses caused by delivery delays (increased costs due to switching to air transport, delivery delay penalties, excess inventory, stock shortages, etc.) are occurring. In this project, we will leverage our existing high-precision arrival and delay prediction algorithms and logistics data infrastructure to conduct research and development on a novel optimal route search function.

Representative	Koji Nakata After graduating from the University of Tokyo and its graduate school, he joined Nippon Yusen. As a container ship salesman, he was in charge of dozens of shippers and forwarders for import/export and trilateral trade. Sensing the challenges of digitalization in existing industries, he joined Accenture and gained experience in consulting for many major companies across industries, focusing on DX projects. After supporting open innovation for major companies at Plug and Play Japan, he is now in his current position. His strengths are his knowledge of both the international logistics industry and his knowledge of IT/DX.
