IRIS Communication, Inc. 2023

Tokyo, Chiyoda Ward

An advanced information society will be achieved when everyone can enjoy the benefits of highly developed ICT. That society must have no digital divide, and everyone can easily and comfortably access information systems. Unfortunately, however, there are countless people around the world who experience visual stress when accessing information systems, including hundreds of millions of visually impaired who suffer from light sensitivity and color blindness. To relieve this stress, human-friendly information systems with man-machine interfaces (MMI) that match the visual characteristics of various individuals are required. In order to help the world's visually impaired, it is necessary to establish a telemetry system that enables measurement of the visual characteristics of various individuals at any time and from any place and to create an optimized MMI for their characteristics. This telemetry system can only be realized by developing and utilizing advanced ICT, including cloud computing and VR goggles.

INNOVATION

Development of an MMI (Man-Machine Interface) and telemetry system for the visually impaired

An advanced information society can be established when everyone can enjoy the benefits of highly developed ICT. This society must be one that does not create ICT-weak people (digital divide), and one in which everyone can easily and comfortably access information systems. However, unfortunately, there are countless people around the world who experience visual stress when accessing information systems, including hundreds of millions of people who suffer from photosensitivity and color blindness, known as visually weak people. To relieve this stress, a human-friendly information system with an MMI (man-machine interface) that matches the visual characteristics of various individuals is required.
To save the visually weak people of the world, it is necessary to establish a remote measurement system that can measure the visual characteristics of various individuals from anywhere at any time, and to create an optimal MMI according to those characteristics. This remote measurement system can only be realized by developing and utilizing advanced ICT, including cloud computing and VR goggles.

IRIS Communication, Inc. Representative Introduction
REPRESENTATIVE

Representative Masafumi Yano Masafumi Yano
Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1946. Professor Emeritus at Tohoku University. After completing his doctoral studies at the Graduate School of Science at Kyushu University, he worked as an assistant, lecturer and associate professor at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Tokyo, before becoming a professor at the Tohoku University Research Institute of Electrical Communication in 1992. The institute is the only information and communications research institute at a Japanese university, and he served as its director from 2007 to 2010. His field of research is information processing and control mechanisms in living organisms and the brain (biological computing systems), and he continues to conduct original research that integrates knowledge of brain science, biological science, and information processing and control.
Main Achievements 2023: Participated in the ICT Startup League
2021: Author of "Paradigm Shift in Scientific Capital: The Post-Pandemic World"
2018: Author of "Yano Masafumi's Predicate Theory of Science (Library iichiko 139)"
2012: Author of "Changing Japan: From Separated Science and Technology to Non-Separated Science and Technology"
2007-2010: Director of the Tohoku University Research Institute of Electrical Communication

Motivation, Goals, and Ideal World Many people live their lives enduring stress from their eyes, but many people are born with light sensitivity that causes problems in their lives. Although there are large individual differences in brightness perception, no research has been done on what brightness is appropriate for each individual. Some people who work daily looking at documents and monitors have been relieved of stress, seen colors clearly, and been able to read documents more easily when they wear the lenses we developed. As far as I have researched, about 40% of people would be better off cutting out about 80% of the light they receive in a normal living environment. It is not possible to draw the line at which someone has Irlen syndrome (photosensitivity), but I think that this is far more than the report that about 6% of Japanese people have Irlen syndrome. The measurement system we developed can measure not only people with photosensitivity but also people with color vision problems, and color vision can be improved. Our quantitative measurement method, corrective lenses, and the ICT MMI (man-machine interface) that applies them will be good news for the approximately 10 million Japanese people who have photosensitivity and color vision polymorphism. This will be an especially effective learning support for children, improving their quality of life (QOL) throughout their lives.
