I want to deliver 'voice' to the hearing impaired. For those with moderate or greater hearing loss, even with hearing aids, sounds like car horns can be heard, but it is difficult to distinguish human 'voices.' This is caused by issues with the auditory nerve or the brain, a problem that has not been solved for 150 years. Therefore, we have developed a new hearing device that converts conversation into real-time sign language interpretation or subtitles and projects them onto AR glasses. The business concept is to use hearing devices for 'sound' and AR glasses to 'hear' the 'voice.' If this technology becomes a reality, communication for the hearing impaired will evolve innovatively, changing the world.

Development of a new form of hearing aid that projects remote sign language interpretation video and subtitles onto see-through AR glasses

We want to deliver "voices" to the hearing impaired.
Some may think, "Why now?"
In fact, many people with hearing loss can hear "sounds" such as horns and sirens to a certain extent even when they wear hearing aids, but they cannot hear the essential "voices". This is not due to the performance of the hearing aid, but due to a problem with the auditory nerve, inner ear, and brain, and is a problem that has not been solved for 150 years since the development of hearing aids, and it is presumed that it will be difficult to solve completely in the future.
Furthermore, the most common way to communicate with the hearing impaired is through written communication and subtitles, but for deaf people whose first language is sign language, the grammar of Japanese and sign language is completely different, so they have difficulty understanding long sentences, and there is also the issue that it is difficult to accurately grasp the meaning of a sentence.
So, based on the concept of "listen" with a hearing aid and "voice" with AR glasses, I devised a new type of hearing aid that converts the content of a conversation into a sign language interpretation video or subtitles in real time and projects either one of them on a see-through AR glass.
When this becomes a reality, it will be a revolutionary breakthrough in communication for the deaf around the world.

Representative Shinji Naka Shinji Naka
We are currently preparing to establish a corporation called "signers" that will provide services for the hearing impaired. I previously worked in a department that dispatched sign language interpreters for a hearing-impaired organization. My wife is completely deaf and usually communicates in sign language. In my daily interactions with hearing-impaired people, I have witnessed their unique worries and suffering. Signers will incorporate the voices of hearing-impaired people and, as much as possible, have them themselves involved in the development and operation of the service, creating a service that is necessary for the hearing impaired.

Motivation, Goals, and Ideal World My motivation for taking on this project comes from a deep personal experience. When I was working as a sign language interpreter dispatcher for a hearing-impaired organization, I witnessed the serious communication difficulties faced by hearing-impaired people. I was particularly saddened by the reality that for deaf people, whose first language is sign language, information cannot be conveyed adequately through written communication or subtitles alone. Writing and transcription apps are useful for obtaining information, but for them, they are forced to focus their eyes on the device in front of them, which impairs their ability to understand the meaning from the other person's facial expressions and gestures.
In addition, my wife is also completely deaf, and I have seen her struggle to communicate with hearing people every day. For her, the challenge is not simply being unable to hear, but the serious problem of isolation from society. Witnessing this reality, I feel the weight of Helen Keller's words, "Deafness separates people from each other." My mission is to solve this problem.
My goal is to create a society where the hearing impaired can live as they wish through the innovative technology of hearing aid glasses. These hearing aid glasses not only compensate for sound, but also project sign language interpretation and subtitles in real time, creating a world where the hearing impaired can communicate naturally and freely. I want to create a future where no one is isolated and can maximize their abilities in society. Through this business, I strongly hope to build a society where all people with hearing impairments can regain their connection with society and enrich their lives.
